COHERENS
COHERENS – COupled Hydrodynamical-Ecological model for REgioNal and Shelf seas
COHERENS is a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose numerical modelling system designed to simulate hydrodynamic, ecological, and sediment transport processes in regional, shelf, and coastal seas. Its development is led by the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.
COHERENS offers a comprehensive framework that integrates:
- 3D hydrodynamic modelling
- Sediment and morphological dynamics
- Biogeochemical and ecological processes
- Tracer and contaminant transport
Its modular and flexible architecture makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, from academic research to operational forecasting and environmental impact assessments.
COHERENS is part of an open-source initiative, freely available to everyone under the EUPL license.

Applications
North Sea model
Model results with COHERENS using a nesting strategy, from the Continental Shelf and Atlantic Margin (CoSAM), to the North Sea (NoS) to the Southern Bight (SoB). The video shows surface elevation in CoSAM, surface temperature in NoS and surface salinity in SoB for 5 days in February 2007.
